Hi, I’m Shea the Garden State Hiker. I was born in New York City and raised in Central and Northern New Jersey. Yes, summers were spent down the shore. I went hiking only a handful of times as a kid. Because my first hiking experience was terribly unsuccessful, my parents were afraid to subject me to my greatest fear, bugs, ever again. After high school, I moved out to Madison, Wisconsin for college and discovered that not all people listen to techno and Bruce but everyone has misconceptions about New Jersey. My time in Madison gave me my love of coffee, biking and taking on great challenges. During a semester abroad in China, I went on my first backpacking trip through rural areas of the Tibetan Autonomous Region. I’d like to think you don’t have to go all the way to Tibet to find beauty and adventure. I don’t know what I’m going to find on these 50 hikes in New Jersey, but I’m excited to find out and share with you!
The list of 50 hikes is here.
You might just see one of these guys in the corner of a picture:
Mr. Knightley is a Westie, the offspring of champion show dogs (think Westminster Dog Show.) Unfortunately, his own show dog career ended before it began due to an undescended testicle. He still tries to get by with his good looks and has been known to pout on the trail when he’s had enough of the wilderness.
Nervous Nellie is a rescue dog who comes from a backyard breeder in New York where she was forced to have many many litters of puppies. She’s skittish and afraid most of the time, but outdoors she shows glimpses of her inner courage and true Boston Terrier zest.
